does anyone know how i can get it to zoom in animated?
i need it to zoom on the little robot

You could tween the zoom, 1st frame original size then end frame scale the picture larger. You may need to change the background image into a graphic symbol however as tween can be a bit funny with just bitmap images.

This should work even if objects are on different layers just set a tween on each individual layer, then select everything and scale up on the last frame.

i just created a motion tween and scaled it at the end, but playing it back it just goes from small to large, not gradually
did i do something wrong, or will i need to scale it gradually?

Yeah make sure it starts off normal then scale larger, yeah extend the tween so it last over a longer period of time and in properties add 'ease out' by moving the dial into the positive numbers this will slow the motion as it zooms making it look smotther and more gradual. If you have any problems I can help you in class tomorrow.
