Unit 12 Task 1 Empty
PostSubject: Unit 12 Task 1   Unit 12 Task 1 EmptyWed Oct 14, 2009 1:02 pm

For my research, I researched Nintendo, I chose these because they are very big in the video game world.
They started out making card games in the 1800’s and then went onto the video game industry from 1975 onwards. Starting out with the Magnavox Odyssey console, and more recently, the Nintendo Wii and the 3DS.
Not only haven they created some of the most iconic Video games and characters, these being games such as The Legend Of Zelda and Super Mario. The well known characters being Link from The Legend Of Zelda Series, Mario from the super Mario series, and Yoshi from the super Mario and Yoshi games.

In the games industry, there are many differant departments in one company, such as the concept art.

Concept art is where a game
starts to be created. This is where people draw out all of their initial ideas and some of them are chosen but not all make it
into the final product and are left out of the game.

There is the Marketing department aswell, this is where people get the game
out to the public and where all the advertising campagns are created.

Another department is the 3D moddeling/textureing. This is
where all the game assets are made and tested. the concept art goes into this department when its finished and the 3D artists are
the people who turn somthing from a 2D drawing into a full 3D model thats textured.

All types of jobs in the games industry have responsibilites, some more than others. Someone in marketing has quite a large
responsibility because they are the people who sell the game, and get the word around that the game is coming out. They also decide
on where it will be markeed. Someone in concept art H
as the responsibility of creating a good idea that the rest of the development
team can follow and they have to provide decent drawing of the character/object otherwise the moddeler will have a hard job creating it.
The 3D moddeler: The 3D moddler is in charge of making the characters and assets for the levels in a game, and possibly even the cinematic models.

Marketing: This is where people get together and decide on the posters, box art and adverts for the game, along with the different ways of getting information of the games out there, like viral marketing and signs.

Texture artist: The texture artist is somebody who draws out the textures ready for putting on a 3D model.

The coder: The coder is someone who codes the game engine, for the game and gets the models working in the game with the animations.

Concept artist: The concept artist is someone who draws out the inital ideas and also draws out the blueprints for the 3d modeller to model

Motion Control:
Motion controls are being used alot more often now than they used to be, because of the Nintendo Wii with its motion controls, It has been implemented into all games for the wii, such as resident evil 4 Wii edition, this is a port from the ps2 version but the otion controls are used in it for times when you are being chased by a boulder, you must shake the controller to get away.

Music Games:
Music games have been alot more popular recently, with the release of the guitar hero games and the rock band games. These are popular because they are great party games to play with a group of friends, and give an immersive experience for the players.

User Generated Content:
User generated content is growing for pc games, with more people having access to game SDK’s more easily and plenty of tutorials available. User generated content is a very good thing for games, because that created some of the most fun games that are available, such as counter strike. And not necessarily just for game engines, but putting their own “skins” into a game, so that they can change the look of the game to their liking.

One of the different types of contracts used in the games industry is a yearly contract. This is where somebody is employed on a yearly contract, and when that year is over they are assessed on how well they have performed and whether or not the company will hire them again for a longer period. Another type of contract that would be used is the work for hire, and when under this contract any work that would be made would be property of the company and not their own.

There are a lot of ethical concerns to take into account too, such
as the amount of gore you have in a game can dramatically effect the ethics, if you have a game with peoples limbs coming off then people are going to complain about it, or if you have a game with lots of swearing then some people will find it uncomfortable and unethical, this can also greatly increase the age rating and this cuts out a large portion of the audience.
