PostSubject: u65: 3D Animation - Declan Dowling   u65: 3D Animation - Declan Dowling EmptyWed Sep 30, 2009 1:39 pm

Anticipation

Anticipation is where an indication that something is about to happen, which can be done using sounds, pictures or a mixture of both. An example of Anticipation would be when kicking a ball the leg would be shown moving backwards before the ball is kicked.

Follow Through

This is when a movement is continued after the initial action because of momentum. An example of follow through would be when running something would not be able to stop immediately, and instead would have to slow down before coming to a halt.

Exaggeration

Exaggeration is used to emphasize something. This is often used in animation to make something stand out, or in exaggeration of characters features. For example if a character was supposed to have big ears, they would be considerably oversized to get the point across.

Secondary Action

Secondary Action is when something happens, which causes something else to happen. For example if someone threw a stone into the pond, it would cause a splash and ripples in the water.

Squash & Stretch

This is something is made to flex naturally when colliding with something else. A good example of this would be a ball bouncing off the floor, when the ball makes contact with the floor the shape of the ball would change slightly and would become shorter and fatter, then when the ball leaves the floor it would be slightly taller and thinner than it was originally.

Character Personality

This technique is used to portray the personal traits of a character. For example for a character to be portrayed as confident they would walk with their shoulders back and head up where as if a character was made to look shy they would walk looking at downwards with a bad posture.

Leg:

Need to make it look more like a baggy pair of pants.

Body:
u65: 3D Animation - Declan Dowling Body
Block out of the body, need to add pouches ect.

Arm:
u65: 3D Animation - Declan Dowling Arm
Still need to cut in the rolled sleeves.

Boot:
u65: 3D Animation - Declan Dowling Boot
Not really happy with the boots, will probably redo them.

Character so far:

I still need to cut a hole in the body and connect the arm.

Looks good Declan, you might want to get the body parts in proportion though, the inside of the legs go up too far and the legs themselves are too long.
And as Jack says post some screen-shots of the work in between the sketch and the current version.

Wow, Declan, this is looking great! But as Andy mentioned, the legs go up too far. So much so that your character doesn't seem to have a crotch, which might make animating difficult and might even make the end animation look iffy. But if you sort that out you'll have yourself a top notch model. Come on, brah, you can do it!

@Jack, I can't really go back and take a screenshot of me moving every single edge loop. Which is why I just posted the main sections as I made them. This is only a rough block out anyway, as I add more i'll be posting more screenshots for everything.

@Andy, I noticed the proportion problem myself when looking back on it. I don' think the legs are too long its just that the upper body is small in comparrison. I modelled this using an anatomy sheets as reference images, but I do think the upper body needs to be bigger. As for the inside of the legs going up too far, its because I haven't closed that off yet.

@Alex, I do plan on adding a crotch Smile.

I'll be posting up my adding the head and pouches ect soon enough.
Heres sorta what I want to add / fix.

I think the making in parts idea can work out well I would like to know what your character is goign to be hard to tell at the moment. Keep at it and will be good. Also good point i think thats mistake weall made as shown by marks.

I like that you've thought into the detail of where his gear is going to sit Declan, have a medal where you have placed the question mark on the picture Smile
It would look better than a red question mark on his jacket.

I like the way you've drawn over a screen cap of your model to show what you plan to add. I may do something similar as it's a good way to demonstrate what you plan to model. I look forward to seeing more in the future, Declan, maybe you'll give your character a crotch sometime soon.

I like the lack of crotch personally, it leaves that amnosty about the character. Good or bad? Old or young? Male or female?

Only Declan has these answers.

I'd say I liked it, if it wouldn't make me feel so bad about myself.

But hey, it's coming along great. I like the pics you've posted, showing what you plan to add is a great idea.

Now that your model detail has gone from red lines done on Photoshop MS paint to cinema work its looking very well, pockets will look good with detail on texture like buttons etc...
